Xbox Box shipped early for some through Target

 

UPDATE: And both the ebay listing and the unboxing video have been taken down.  The YouTube unboxing video has been taken down following a "copyright claim by Microsoft Corporation." However, the twitter account for @R3TR0_G4M3R_69 has a link to YouTube video (http://youtu.be/6yVBaJwl8gk) is still active.  

A shipping error may have turned out to be very beneficial for a few lucky people who ordered their Xbox One through Target.  

 

One person, who goes by the twitter handleMoonLightSwami posted the YouTube unboxing video below. He claims that he ordered the Xbox One through Target, and they shipped it today, a full two weeks before the system's official launch.

Although the system is purported to require aday one patch to function, Swami's twitter account says the patch is currently available and he is able to get online

Another enterprising recipient of an Xbox One is selling the unit on eBay for the less-than-reasonable buy-it-now price of $10,000, as reported by Kotaku. However, the listing is currently inactive, with the message: "This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing."

Nolan told David that he would be happy to help saying, "whatever it takes to keep Atari alive and connected with its rich history absolutely, I support 100%. I know David well, and he's a good man, and what he's done with Game Over Videogames in such a short time is amazing. With this purchase, I am confident that Atari will be in great hands now and forever." What at one time was a billion-dollar company was sold in its entirely to Game Over Videogames for a mere $13 million in cash - "not cheap, but a fantastic deal considering the historical brand value - plus, the marketing of the Atari name and logo alone is worth many times that number," says Kaelin.

Kaelin has already outlined his framework for the massive turnaround he has in store for Atari. First, all current projects will be scrapped, and Atari will begin to immediately reestablish itself by returning to its roots - retro video games. Preview: New ‘Star Trek’ Game Serves As Official Bridge Between Films


Rest assured Star Trek fans, Paramount’s new game linking the 2009 reboot film to this year’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” looks to be a winner, based on our recent walkthrough.

The game does not officially hit stores until April 23, less than a month before the new film’s hotly anticipated release. But we were able to preview most of the game’s levels and received an in-depth explanation of the game’s original, and canonical, storyline.

“We wanted to break the trend of movie based games,” Paramount’s Brian Miller told Yahoo News during an extensive preview of the still unfinished game. Usually, when a company like Paramount wants to make a video game based on one of their film properties, they contract the work out to an outside studio. And over the years, the results have been decidedly mixed.

In this case, they decided to go the exact opposite route. “In order to do it the right way we had to do it ourselves,” Miller said, acknowledging the endeavor is a bigger risk for the studio but also offers the potential for higher reward.

The third-person shooter finds gamers in control of Captain Kirk and Commander Spock and picks up the story shortly after the last film. Diehard Trek fans will quickly notice subtle ways in which the characters have evolved since we last saw them on screen.

For example, actor Chris Pine, who reprises his role as Kirk for the game, speaks and behaves more as the in-command captain of the classic 1960’s television series and less like the punky upstart we met in the 2009 reboot.

“They have a lot of bumps in the road as they are sort of finding their way,” Miller says. “But at the same time, Kirk has now spent some time in the captain’s chair and players will notice that change.”

And for anyone concerned that a new Star Trek game would be just be another mindless, shoot-em-up, there are several pleasant layers to the game that should please more cerebral gamers. For example, the tricorder plays a significant role in the game, allowing players to thoroughly investigate their environments in a technique that evokes Batman’s “detective mode” in the popular “Arkham” series.

Although graphics were still being completed, we did see some finished cinematic cut scenes from the game and they looked solid. As to other details of the game itself, Paramount says “Star Trek” will be offered across multiple platforms, including Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. It will feature online co-op play and 3D functionality but Paramount decided against hands free functionality using Microsoft’s Kinect or Sony’s Move.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game – and one that is sure to give its 15 hour storyline strong replay value – is that Kirk and Spock experience events in the game through their own personal points of view. Those experiential differences affect the larger aspects of the game including combat techniques and approaches to problem solving. During away missions, Kirk can call in an airstrike from the Enterprise, while Spock is able to deploy his famous Vulcan pinch move.

The unique perspectives also carry down to how other, non-player controlled characters interact with the player. Yes, that means the same female alien character hanging out in the Enterprise hallways will flirt with Kirk but largely ignore Spock.

We were also shown some levels of the game that breakout from the traditional shooter role. There are two levels that allow players to experience the thrill of skydiving in scenes reminiscent of the great drill platform scene from the 2009 film.

And yes, there are sequences where the player takes direct control of the Enterprise. In co-op mode, one player fires the ship’s lasers while the other is in charge of deploying the photon torpedoes.

In one of the most entertaining levels we saw, the game’s developers merged two famous episodes from the original series, during which Kirk and Spock are forced to battle each other to the amusement of their new enemy.

“When you've been playing a game with a buddy for a few hours you're going to welcome the opportunity to punch him,” Miller said.

And speaking of those enemies…

The Gorn Identity

Star Trek has its share of classic villains: Klingons, the Borg, Khan and so on. But with J.J. Abrams keeping the “Star Trek Into Darkness” villain under an airtight veil of secrecy, many fans have looked to the game for clues.

On this front, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that a beloved villain is being brought back into the fold: the Gorn. The bad news, at least for impatient fans, is that the game won’t be giving away too many secrets about the upcoming film.

“The last film served as a bridge to this game. But we wanted this to be a standalone story,” Miller said. “So many film-to-game adaptations are a quick cash grab. We didn't want our story to be a piece of merchandise.”

Story has been the central focus for Paramount over the past three years as they developed the game. They worked closely with the creative team from the Star Trek films – including bringing back the principal cast to reprise their roles in the game.

They even brought in Academy Award winning composer, and frequent Abrams collaborator, Michael Giacchino and his 100-piece orchestra to create an original score for the game.

“We were throwing everything at it,” Miller said.

As the game opens, the U.S.S. Enterprise is sent to investigate a space station under duress. The station has been tasked with research on the New Vulcan colony project, developing a new home world for Spock’s species, whose home planet was destroyed in the last film.

But as Kirk and Spock explore the station, they learn something has gone very wrong. The Starfleeet commander in charge of the station has attempted to exploit a risky new technology that has ripped open a wormhole in space, which serves as a doorway for the invading Gorn, a violent and imperial species first seen in the 1967 episode “Arena” from the original Trek TV series.

The “Arena” episode is one of the most beloved of the original series. So, the Paramount team was careful about updating a classic villain. However, the Gorn is nearly as well known for the dated rubber costume worn by actor Bobby Clark. Miller and his team set out to update the Gorn, creating no less than 15 different species of Gorn, including brute fighters, cunning team leaders and even a female Gorn that leaps off of walls to attack unsuspecting players.

When Spock performs a mind meld on one of the captured Gorn we also learn some fun and exciting details about their backstory as a merciless race of marauders that have conquered their own galaxy through endless war.

During that mind meld sequence the player controlling Spock is forced to take part in the Gorn’s hostile actions, including the cold-blooded murder of the Vulcan commander aboard the space station; a man who served as Spock’s mentor.

“We want you to feel like you just watched a Star Trek film,” Miller said.

Video games as story: A cautionary tale

Over the years, each new gaming platform has offered leaps forward in graphics, sound and scope. But the fundamental aspects of storytelling have largely remained relegated to the backburner. As Tom Bissell writes in his excellent book “Extra Lives,” the fundamental game playing experience is often directly at odds with classic narrative.

In Star Trek parlance, there has been no shortage of “red shirt” efforts in the history of gaming.

In theory, an adaptation of existing characters like those in like Star Trek can overcome some of these challenges. After all, almost anyone picking up the game is already likely to know something about Kirk and Spock.

But examining the legacy of movie-to-game adaptations is often akin to wading through a junkyard of failed endeavors. “Avatar” is the most successful film in history but do you know anyone who raves about the game that sets up the events leading into the film? And while we’ve had a pair of excellent Batman games in recent years, they are not directly connected to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy of films. While more successful game adaptations, including “The Walking Dead” and “Back to the Future” installments from Telltale Games have succeeded by dropping players into a non-traditional format that is often more like reading an interactive graphic novel than an arcade experience.

What Paramount has attempted to do is build on the rebooted characters introduced in the 2009 film within the game’s original story but also through the gameplay itself.

“In my opinion game developers are still struggling with story. Trek was never just running around and shooting people,” Miller said.

To help craft their story, Paramount recruited God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk.

“We’ve had a fundamental discussion of what Star Trek is -- Kirk and Spock. Those two parts of our own psychology are us at our core.”

Making the challenge even greater, they had to work around the notorious “mystery box” culture cultivated by Abrams. When the game team came up with ideas for their story, they would await permission from the director’s camp.

Paramount also wasn’t shy about acknowledging some of their inspirations, including what they called the “circular influence” of BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy. “Mass Effect was definitely inspired by Star Trek,” Miller said. “And we, in turn, have been influenced by them in the development of our game.“

The Paramount team is clearly a little nervous about the launch of their signature game, a stance that is unusual and honestly a little endearing coming from such a large corporate entity. But they were also very forthcoming about their efforts to make this not just a game, but also a story, that Star Trek fans can embrace.

Town Ending 29 Year Video Game Ban

From Pacman to Pin Ball, citizens of the town Marshfield, MA, will finally get their chance to play video games in public once again as a 29 year old ban on video games will be lifted soon. It all started back in 1982 due to fears that video games were causing the town kids to steal money from the parents to play them and "go wild" in the process. This was obviously a pretty nutty mindset but perhaps some of it was legitimate back then?
Local bars and other establishments are greatly awaiting the return for the ability to put in video games machines to hopefully increase business. One of the council women that helped the ban go through at the time remembers it being more a concern of what would it lead to next in that gambling could be put in place but maybe that is a bit of extreme paranoia?

China Considering End To 13-year Ban On Video Game Consoles


SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China is considering lifting a decade-long ban on video game consoles, the official China Daily newspaper reported on Monday, sending shares of major hardware makers such as Sony Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd surging.
In November, Sony's PlayStation 3 received a quality certification from a Chinese safety standards body, prompting speculation that Beijing would lift the ban, which the government said was imposed in 2000 to safeguard children's mental and physical development.
"We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console market," the China Daily quoted an unnamed source from the Ministry of Culture as saying.
"However, since the ban was issued by seven ministries more than a decade ago, we will need approval from all parties to lift it."
An official at the ministry's cultural market department, which is responsible for the legislation, denied the report.
"The ministry is not considering lifting the ban," the official, who identified himself only as Bai, told Reuters.
In Tokyo, Sony shares traded 8 percent higher while Nintendo gained over 3.5 percent, outperforming a broadly weaker Nikkei index.
Yoshiko Uchiyama, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment, a unit of Sony, said she could not comment directly on the report.
"Our stance towards business in China has not changed. Of course, we acknowledge China as a promising market for our business, and we are always considering and preparing business opportunities and possibilities (in the country)," she said.
A Nintendo spokesman declined to comment.
Earlier moves suggest Chinese authorities are ready to take a softer line on game consoles.
Last year, Lenovo Group Ltd launched the Eedoo CT510, a motion sensing device similar in concept to Microsoft Corp's Kinect extension for its Xbox game console. Lenovo marketed the Eedoo as an "exercise and entertainment machine".
Video game consoles are banned in China, but online gaming and playing games on mobile devices are both extremely common, which analysts say limits the potential upside for Sony and rival game machine makers.

West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller Reintroduces Bill To CongressCalling For Study Into Impact Of Violent Games On Children.

A bill calling for research into the effects of violent games on children will live on. Democratic West Virginia senator Jay Rockefeller reintroduced the bill to Congress this week, after it originally expired at the end of the 112th Congress last month.  First introduced last month just days after the December 14 schoolhouse shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the bill--S.134--would task the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to study the effects of violent video games and other programs on children.
"Major corporations, including the video game industry, make billions on marketing and selling violent content to children," Rockefeller said at the time. "They have a responsibility to protect our children. If they do not, you can count on the Congress to take a more aggressive role."
The bill has four co-sponsors, including three republicans and one democrat. They are Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Thomas Coburn (R-OK), Dean Heller (R-NV), and Mike Johanns (R-NE). The potential legislation has been referred to the Senate's Commerce, Science, and Transportation committee, according to government documents.  According to public research firm GovTrack, the bill has a 13 percent chance of progressing past committee and a 2 percent chance of being enacted.  The bill would direct the NAS to conduct a "comprehensive study and investigation" of the link between violent games and other violent video programming and harmful effects on children. More specifically, the NAS would be charged with looking into whether or not video games/programming cause children to act aggressively or "otherwise hurt their wellbeing," and if so, determine if that effect is notably distinguishable from other types of media.  This study would also look at the "direct and long-lasting impact" of violent content on a child's well-being. If the bill passes, NAS must submit a report on its study within 18 months to Congress as well as the FTC and FCC.  S.134 is not the only newly proposed legislative action targeting games in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. President Barack Obama recently introduced a $500 million, 23-point plan that called for the Centers for Disease Control to conduct further research into the relationship between violence in media and violence in the real world.
The Entertainment Software Association--which represents the gaming industry's interests in Washington, DC--has said it will cooperate with the Obama administration, but claimed scientific research has proven entertainment does not cause real-world violent behavior.
In addition, Republican Utah congressman Jim Matheson recently introduced a bill to the House that would make the Entertainment Software Rating Board ratings legally enforceable, with fines up to $5,000. The ESA called this legislation "flawed."
In state-level news, a Missouri representative has introduced a bill that aims to charge a 1 percent excise tax on all games sold inside the state rated T, M, or AO.

Atari Files For Bankruptcy

Video game innovator Atari has filed for bankruptcy in a bid to cut ties with its troubled French parent holding company.  The US branches of Atari – Atari Inc, Atari Interactive Inc, Humongous Inc and California US Holdings, have jointly filed petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.  Atari SA and Atari Europe SAS have also filed for related procedures before the French courts.  With this move, the US-based Atari operations hope to separate from the ‘structural financial encumbrances’ of its French parent holding company, Atari SA.
Instead it hopes to secure independent capital for future growth, primarily in the areas of digital and mobile games.

In a statement, Atari said that within the next 90-120 days, the companies expect to effectuate a sale of all, or substantially all, of their assets in a ‘sale free and clear’ under section 363 of the Bankruptcy Code, or to confirm plans of reorganization that accomplish substantially the same result.  These assets include not only one of the most widely recognized brand logos, but also legendary game titles including Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Battlezone and Tempest.

In a statement from Atari SA, it said the company is currently profitable on an operating basis and had been paying off debt. However, as its main shareholder and sole lender, BlueBay, has been unable to find a buyer for its stake in Atari, this led to the company being ‘starved for funds and unable to finance its continued growth.

Arcade game pioneer
Founded in 1972, American video game and home computer company Atari Inc, was seen as a pioneer in arcade games, home video game consoles and home computers.  From the 1970s to the mid-1980s, Atari Inc’s games such as tennis sports game Pong and the hugely popular Atari 2600 console, helped define the computer entertainment industry and helped propel the company into the limelight.  Parent company Infogrames completed its takeover of Atari in 2008 and soon after renamed itself Atari SA.

Business to continue during bankruptcy?
A company spokesman said the Chapter 11 process is the most ‘strategic’ option for Atari’s US operations, as they look to preserve their ‘inherent value’ and unlock revenue potential ‘unrealized while under the control of Atari SA’.  During this period, the company expects to conduct its normal business operations.
The US companies are also seeking approval to obtain $5.25 million from one or more funds managed by Tenor Capital Management, to allow them to continue business during the bankruptcy.

Will The STEAM BOX Be The Future Gen Of Consoles?

It is rumored that 2013 is the end of this current gen of console and the start of a new one, while Sony and Microsoft Next-Gen of console existence are not clear, and Sony's PSVita is in Cocoon state, Nintendo step up and bring us the Wii U with promising feature, stating it will be the new dawn of next-gen console.

However, as it current state, the Wii U is only on PS3 and Xbox360 level, so the possibility of it being a future generation console is questionable. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have been competing for years, and the release of the Wii U is just Nintendo attempt to out-sell Sony or Microsoft, to call it a next-gen console is blasphemy if not laughable because it's is only on PS3 and Xbox360 level, as I repeat myself so to be sure.

Thus, what will be the hope for our gamer? What will be the true Future-Gen or Next-Gen Console?

I'm afraid we have our answer, not so long ago, at VGA 2012, Valve, a video-game company responsible for the Half-Life Series and Steam ( The world best digital gaming and market service for PC gaming) had announced that they will join in the battle between the company, and to make themselves clear, they announced the existence of their own Video Game Console, called the Steam Box, and Gabe Newell, the head of Valve promised it would be the true start of the Next Generation of Video Gaming Console and stated that it will compete with Sony and Microsoft Next-gen console ( It's also amusing that he didn't even mention Nintendo).

So what is a Steam Box? It's a console currently developed by Valve and Alienware ( Best Known for Powerful Gaming Laptop and PC). With power and spec as powerful as the Alienware X51, which is 5 times more powerful than the Wii U and the PS3 or Xbox360, in fact it's a redesign of the same Alienware but run on a different engine, called the Steam Engine.

What make this console unique is that it have a storage of over 1000GB, worth 1 Terabyte I guess, which mean it could store up to 200 digital downloaded installed game or more, it can run video, play music or view Photos and is compatible with every TV screen, with user friendly interface, 6 USB port, 3 in front and 3 in the back for additional storage USB or a Controller or Game pad, of course Steam Box has it own controller:
A pitch black redesign of the Xbox Controller but with more features to be announce.

The Steam Box act like the Wii U, like if you're playing and like your kid want to watch My Little Pony, well, you can press a button on the controller and then you can continue playing on a PC screen or Laptop Screen, so as long as there are Wi-fi to transfer data.

The Steam Box run PC Games, either physical or digital, and Gabe Newell said that there will also be Steam Box Exclusive games, one of them is Half-Life 3, yes, the final chapter or episode of Half-Life, long waited for so many years.

Second of all, Steam PAY you to gain achievement, it's not like real money, but digital money which can be used to buy games on Steam or give you bonus item for a different game make by the same company, for example if you play Batman Arkham Asylum and beat it 50%, you get an achievement that unlock a special Free DLC mission and Costume for Batman Arkham City, some case, even the Harley Queen DLC.
